J&K State-An Overview:

Jammu and Kashmir state is a multi-faceted diamond, set like a crown jewel on the map of India’s northern extremity having a geographical area of 2, 22,236 Sq. Kms situated between 32.17 & 36.58 North Latitude and 73.26 & 80.30 East Longitude. As per 2011 Census, the state with a population of 12.50 million has a literacy rate of 68.74%.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir represents a unique geographical diversity of temperate valley of Kashmir, arid arctic zone of Ladakh and a subtropical range of Jammu. The world famous "Valley of Kashmir" said to be the Nature’s grand finale of beauty is enveloped by thick coniferous forests, lush green meadows, pristine fresh water lakes, snow clad mountains, spectacular landscape and breath-taking scenic beauty. Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, an ancient picturesque city and a tourist resort on the banks of river Jhelum along the shore of world famous Dal Lake steeped in legend and history dating back to B.C. era. Ladakh, internationally recognized adventure tourism destination is an arctic arid zone comprising of lofty barren mountains, vast stretches of barren land, salt water lakes encompassing centuries old Buddhist monasteries enticing the visitors with its cultural and ethnic traditions. Jammu has been the axis of Rajas, Maharajas who have enriched the cultural, historic and social bonds of all the diverse ethnic and linguistic sections of the state.

The snow clad mountains and slopes in the state coupled with Gondola Cable Car facility at Gulmarg offers one of the best skiing experience in the world which can’t be described but only experienced. Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Patnitop are some of the famous ski-resorts of the state. Gulmarg in Kashmir is the highest lift served ski-resort in the world providing a downhill ski run of 5.2 Km’s from a height of 14000 ft. in the Apharwat Range.

Kashmir has earned a place in the hearts of golf lovers owing to its long golfing season from April to November. The golf course at Gulmarg (2,650m) is the world’s highest green golf course. The Gulmarg Golf club was set up by the British in 1904. The golf course at Pahalgam provides an out of the world golfing experience to the golf lovers in the Pir-Panchal range at world famous Tourist Resort at Pahalgam in South Kashmir. Royal Spring Golf Course at Chashmashahi in Srinagar figures among the top ten picturesque courses in the world and is the venue of many prestigious golfing events.

Kashmir is the home of exquisite handicrafts. An exceptionally rich tradition of workmanship has developed in the state over the centuries. The scenic beauty of the land has moulded the aesthetic sensibility of the Kashmiri craftsmen, which finds expression in an amazing range of crafts from carpet weaving, shawls, wood carving, Paper-Machie to artistic embroideries. Kashmiri shawl is one of the most cherished acquisitions which adorned the Ceaser’s court and was looked upon by Mughals, Nawabs and British Royal Family as a mark of novelty.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir is blessed with varied agro climatic and topographic conditions which contribute significantly for diversified fruit crop production. Apple, pear, saffron, peach, plum, grapes, apricots, almonds, walnut, mango, guava, citrus, berries and litchi are the main fruits of the state. Paddy, maize and wheat are the main cereals grown here.
The state of Jammu and Kashmir has a bi-cameral parliamentary system of multi-party democracy comprising of State Legislative Assembly and a Legislative Council having a term of six years. The state government is headed by the Chief Minister who is assisted by a ministerial cabinet which is selected by him from the Legislative Assembly / Council. To foster the democratic values and to empower the people at grass-root level,  Panchayati Raj  System of governance at village / block level has been introduced.

Kashmir has been the highest learning point of Sanskrit and Persian where early Indo-Arabic Civilization has originated and flourished. The state has produced a succession of brilliant thinkers, historians, authors, poets and scholars; Bhamaha (founder of Alankara School of Sanskrit), Gani Kashmiri, Sheikh Yaqoob Sarfi, Lalla Arifa, Habba Khatoon, Noor-Ud-Din Reshi are to name a few. Kashmir has one of the oldest written histories called Raj Tarangni authored by Kalhan Pandit in 12th Century C.E which is a factual history of rulers of Kashmir for 4000 years. During the reign of Kushan King Kanishka (75 to 150 A.D),4th Buddhist Conference was held in Kashmir.Mir Syed Ali Hamadani, the renowned muslim saint and scholar has done pioneering work in development of art and handicrafts in Jammu and Kashmir which has got manifested into the inherited craftsmanship and exemplary technical skills which the natives of J & K own since centuries.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir has successfully integrated the modern disciplines of knowledge and education with its past cultural and intellectual heritage. Understanding the need of human resource and manpower development, the state government has put in place a credible infrastructure of education and technical institutes. There are 11 general educational and technical universities, 07 medical and dental colleges, 05 nursing colleges, 08 engineering colleges, 13 poly-technic colleges, 59 Industrial Training Institutes, 38 colleges offering masters degree in Computer Applications, 09 colleges offering Masters in Business Administration,  22 Colleges Offering graduate degree in Law ,145 professional colleges offering Bachelors degree in Education and 117  general education degree colleges.
